In the northwest corner of Maryland, by the borders of Pennsylvania and West Virginia, lies the largest freshwater lake in the state. Along with the Wisp ski resort nearby, Deep Creek Lake State Park offers a multitude of outdoor activities to enjoy in any season.
We went in March (for my birthday/a mini-family reunion) during the last throes of winter. Although there wasn't enough fresh snow to go skiing/snowboarding as we had planned, we headed to Wisp anyway to go ice skating. I also enjoyed an amazing massage at Massage at the Lake on my birthday.
As soon as the weather warms up, you'll see people enjoying the lake itself ... swimming, boating, fishing, jetskiing. There are tons of operators around the lake that offer boat and water toy rentals. The State Park also has a campground and hiking trails.
Not really an outdoorsy type? Don't worry ... the Deep Creek Lake area is also a great place to seek out nothing more than some simple (and sometimes, much needed) rest and relaxation, where your days are spent relaxing in a hot tub overlooking the beautiful and serene lake. We pretty much stayed in the house we rented the entire long weekend.
