Cayo Levisa, Cuba

Updated: Nov 1, 2022

If you've ever wanted a tropical beach all to yourself, Cayo Levisa in Cuba can give it to you. A short ferry ride from Palma Rubia, Cuba, is this small deserted island. Well, deserted aside from the hotel you'll be staying in.

You're not going to Cayo Levisa for a resort experience. There's no infrastructure on the island aside from Hotel Cayo Levisa and it's far from a resort. But who needs a resort when you have your very own private tropical beach?

The island isn't big, but it's big enough that we had no trouble finding stretches of beach without another human in sight. The pristine shallow waters were loaded with starfish and sand dollars. Literally so many it became a challenge not to accidentally step on one.

I was reading Robinson Crusoe at the time and along with a bottle of Cuban rum, it was the perfect companion for a few hours of uninterrupted bliss on the beach.

And really that's the point of a trip to Cayo Levisa - total escape. If you want to ride jetskis or have mai tais at a resort pool, Cayo Levisa won't hit the mark. It's the place to go when you want to be alone with your thoughts, while being surrounded by beautiful turquoise warm waters.

Did I mention the hotel isn't a resort? You're going to love this place if you have the right mindset and that mindset is "roughing it." Maybe glamping, but I think this might be a notch below that. The rooms are fine. No complaints really, just nothing special. Your room is a wooden cottage, which is pretty cool for privacy. Your sheets will be clean, but you'll probably find quite a few bugs in your room. It's hard to escape them on the island. Which reminds me...

Leave the beach at sundown. I made the mistake of remaining in my beach hammock as the evening turned to night and I got to learn about sandflies. Here's what Wikipedia says about sandflies: "Sandfly (or sand fly) is a colloquial name for any species or genus of flying, biting, blood-suckingdipteran (fly) encountered in sandy areas." Once the sun went down, these (literal) suckers were inescapable if you were on the beach. So wear lots of bug spray and head back to your room after sunset.

Since the hotel is pretty much the only thing on the island, you don't have much for food options. Meals are included in your room cost and there are designated hours for breakfast, lunch and dinner at the hotel restaurant. It's mostly buffet-style. Think more like a high school cafeteria as opposed to brunch buffet at the Four Seasons. It's edible stuff, but at best forgettable. Lots of rice and beans and white bread and butter. But boring food is a small price to pay when you've got picture-perfect beaches all to yourself.
